So it's been FAR TOO LONG since I've updated this here blog. Long story short, I didn't have internet at my old place, but I just bought a condo and once again have joined the land of the wireless! What's that saying, "home is where the wi-fi connects automatically?" ha! but for real...

So this past year was pretty awesome! I ended the summer with a road trip to GoNoOdle headquarters (awesome visit!)! My class and I made our television debut on the local CBS Friday afternoon news for a segment called "local teacher uses dance to keep kids fit and focused," featuring our use of GoNoOdle! We won multiple pizza parties for our attendance at spirit nights, and we won two ice cream parties for collecting the most box tops! Oh, and the whole class won free tickets to a Braves game over spring break for having the best handmade shirts when the Braves Caravan came to our school! #winning! haha!

So yeah, GoNoOdle is my jam! They've got Camp GoNoOdle this summer with weekly adventures, camp songs, badges, and campers of the week! Check out Mrs. Ehle's awesome post for all of the details! Don't forget to sign up for a GoNoOdle account here!

I'm joining up with Mrs. Ehle's linky and sharing my faves!
I know I have a Southern accent at times, but so do some of my students. Based on the following picture, I think I need to work on checking my accent at the door, or at least focus on my articulation!!

You need one of these in your life, trust me!

Back in the summer I contacted Troy about reviewing one of those pencil sharpeners that I kept hearing about all over the bloggy place. He was kind enough to send one (twice! I forgot to include my condo's #, whoops!) to the author of this little blog, and I couldn't wait for school to start so that I could put it to use. OHMYWORD y'all, this is the best sharpener! Here's why:

1. it's super easy to use

2, it's super quiet (not if you're the one sharpening, but if it's on the other side of the room, or even a few feet away, you can't hear it)

3. it sharpens your pencils to a super pointy point

4. it's shavings box is deceptively able to hold a lot of shavings, which means you're not stopping to empty it all the time

5. the kiddos scramble to be the first one to ask if they can sharpen the pencils each day

and....

6. it's so fabulous that I haven't even used my heavy duty, super expensive, fancy-schmancy electric pencil sharpener AT ALL this year!

I've uploaded two videos below of my munchkins using this gem of a product! Make sure you contact Troy over at Classroom Friendly Supplies to get your own sharpener, because you can't have mine!

fair city. There's the college football game at the Georgia Dome,
Dragon*Con at the downtown hotels, and the Decatur Book Festival on the
square in Decatur. Dragon*Con is a sci-fi, anime, pop culture
convention of epic proportions. Dressing up and people-watching is so
much fun! I didn't go this year, a) because I went to another event,
and b) because I couldn't think of anything to dress up as (I've donned a
where's waldo? outfit and a hand-made, not by me, Rainbow Brite costume
in past years). I think my friends who went had a great time, though.
I attended the Decatur Book Fest for the first time this year, and I
think it was a fabulous choice! I woke up early on Saturday and found a
spot to park near the square. I walked around for a few minutes before
I heard the snare drum announcing the start of the children's parade,
led by Kevin Henkes and Lily!
I can't wait for next year's festival!!Miss Dennishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16304788180473065577noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1433416580770207266.post-81073392456485271212012-08-29T01:16:00.003-04:002012-09-05T22:32:14.935-04:00Ten!!!!!!!

I have three technology tips for you today...

1.

LiveBinders.com (This was highlighted in a Staff Development this afternoon, and it looks a lot like pinterest, but instead of a picture, the actual website is linked in the binder... and you can make your own binder, or search ones that are already made... I searched for 2nd grade math and found my next technology tip along with a ton of other resources just waiting to be explored!)

2.

Arcademicskillbuilders.com (these are arcade style games for math and language arts that are super fun - I played the penguin multiplication race game- your students can play a game against the computer, or create a game to play against their friends!!)

and finally...

3.

Weebly.com (this is a free website hosting site, so if you're in need of a website for your class and your school doesn't provide you with one, check this guy out! It's super easy to add pages (my kiddos know that when we go to the computer lab, they type in my website, then click the "links Miss Dennis loves" page to access the sites that they can visit! I only wish they had more educational and/or cutesy themes available...)

Oh. Em. Gee. Today marks my third Monday with kiddos, and y'all, I am worn out! I have neglected this poor little blog for far too long... well it ends now. Teacher Week is back, baby! So here are my must haves (some are repeats from last year, and some are new!)

well this is a no-brainer! I don't think I'm alone when I say that Pinterest has changed my lesson planning for the better! (I also love that I can access Pinterest at school, it's back after a short-lived ban due to a "social networking" label...)

this just makes me giggle!

Starbucks Trenta Iced Coffee with Hazlenut and Skim Milk... it makes for a happy morning! (I love when I leave my house early enough to stop in, there's not a drive-thru Sbux on my way- sad face)

My document camera! I have this baby on all day!!

which goes hand in hand with...

my mimio!

(we had to check them in at the end of the year, and re-check them out this year... and the one I got has a busted stylus... no buzzing... no nothing... so sad. have to wait for a replacement- so sad)

I adore school supplies, but my favorite find (originally at Michael's and now at Wal-Mart)...

Scentos! My munchkins love how these smell, and I love how they're chunky, they fit nicely in my hand, and the broad tip makes a nice smiley!

and new to my classroom this year.... the one item that should be on every teacher's wish list (and one that I'll be doing a review on soon):

I'm Going In... (to my classroom)That's what I felt like this "morning" when I finally psyched myself up to go into my classroom. I am lucky enough to have had today off from the restaurant, and I don't have to go in until late evening for the rest of the week, and I have no other prior commitments... which means... I can go to school! Now let me explain the title of this post... my classroom has been used for almost the entire summer for one thing or another, up until the week before last, but last week I was at the literacy institute so I couldn't go work in my room. So since bodies have been in and out of my room all summer, I wasn't sure what I was going to be walking into. Let me just say that I was pleasantly surprised! Everything was pretty much how I left it, and of course I brought my camera along to document the process of putting my room back in order. Enjoy!
Alright, so at the end of the year I moved a filing cabinet that was beside my desk to join the filing cabinet that you see in this picture. The idea was to decrease the amount of "teacher space" that I take up in this room, and downsize the dead space under the window. My desk has to be near the window because that's where the projector business is (remember all those cords?). So I moved the filing cabinet, and it made my teacher area smaller-ish. But then this rolling book cart decided to be a problem. It stuck out far too much. So I moved one of the filing cabinets to the area next to the bathroom, since it holds miscellaneous stuff anyway, I didn't need it near my desk. Moving it gave the rolling cart enough room to exist without completely closing off my kidney table, and both sides of the cart are still accessible. WOOT!

I was involved in one last year, and only 18 classes signed up for it, and we only got about 6 postcards... and I was awful at sending them out during my month. I got all confused about when it was my month, and then I was at a loss for what to write, excuses, excuses, but they finally made it to the post office (after we were finished with school, I'm so ashamed). I was really sad at the involvement level, and I know that I'm partly to blame, but I think that a postcard exchange is a great idea, and I would love to participate in one again. But every time I try to enter one, Georgia has already been taken... I know that there are a bajillion teachers in the USA, and a lot of them teach 2nd... so I'm taking the plunge and starting my own postcard exchange!!! If you'd like to participate (and I so hope you will!!), send me an email at lauren.e.dennis@gmail.com with your name, school name, and address and I'll enter you on my newly created spreadsheet!

Edit: Please spread the news about this exchange! I really want to have every state represented!!!
Bex was confused... she was all "are you okay?!?. what has you so excited besides the school supplies?" um... nothing besides the school supplies... school supplies are enough to get a squeal out of me. The hardworking Target folks were just starting to set up the displays, while trying to convince these other people to buy the last of the outdoor furniture... excuse me while I step around y'all to get to the shiny new supplies!! Oh, don't mind if I do! I loaded up my basket with everything that I want my new munchkins to bring, one of these, three of these, ooh and that, too! As we walked to the front of the store to get some items that hadn't been put out yet, Bex asked if I was actually going to buy all this stuff, or just take a picture of it? Well, I had planned on buying it, staging it at home and then putting it out on display for Registration so that everyone knew what I expected them to bring... but her question made me think twice. So we (really I, she was kind of embarassed to be seen with me at this point) pulled out a black foam-core posterboard and staged a little photo shoot right there in the middle of the "stationary" aisle. I made her use her phone since she has the newer iPhone (with a flash!) and she emailed them to me... she titled the emails "freaking ridic" because yes, I am that much of a nerd... Now you might be wondering why "I" took pictures of all this stuff rather than just making a standard list-style supply list for my kiddos... well, a lot of them speak another language at home, and I didn't want to wait to get it translated, and frankly, I think it looks cuter with pictures. See... look:
I typed up my welcome letter, telling them how I know it seems like summer vacay just started, but how we'll be back in school super soon, I included information about Registration, and gave them their first homework assignment: complete the "all about me" poster from Rachelle's VIP pack. I printed the letters on bright paper, but that was more to make it fun for me when I addressed them. The school gave me envelopes and stamps, and they already had the school's address stamped, but I added "your new teacher!" above the name of the school... I hope the kiddos are as excited to get these as I was to make them! I already told you that I'm a nerd, so it shouldn't surprise you that I used the same color pen to write their names! So on

the upcoming year. All of these items were purchased in June, even
though I'm just now getting around to blogging about them. I had every

IKEA's

chairs do. I also can't stand having extra chairs in my classroom...
they're just bulky!

and
I think that's it for now... I'm sure I have some random little things
that I've forgotten, but now it's time to work on my supply list and
welcome back letter to the kiddos... I received my own welcome back
letter last Friday, and it said that our class lists were ready to be
picked up. I went up to school to pick it up and brought lunch to my
ESOL teacher who is teaching summer school until next Thursday. As of
now I have 25 munchkins in my class, 13 are boys... and one, if not two
boys are known behavior problems... OH, and Gregory Peck is the father
of one of my new kiddos... which made me giggle, because I adore To Kill a Mockingbird. At one point in my high school years I had 5 copies of this on my bookshelf. I know it's not the real Gregory Peck, but I still giggled...

Can
you believe that we go back on the 30th... of this month... it's soooo
close! I'm planning on having my welcome packet ready to mail by
Friday, so I'll plan on posting pictures and descriptions of what's
included on Friday!

Hey y'all! I'm linking up with Tara from 4th Grade Frolics for my very first Monday Made It!

So here's the story... some of the first pins I ever pinned were of wreaths. I was getting ready to move into my condo and I had this grand idea of making a wreath for every holiday (I really like holidays, I have a 3 foot "Holiday Conifer" in my classroom that we decorate every month!). But life got in the way and the first wreath I made was last month for a friend's housewarming present... and when I was in Hobby Lobby gathering supplies for her wreath, I found these (well not these exact colors, but very similar... ).

I wasn't sure what I was going to do with them... maybe the fairy light garland with some ribbon added... maybe something else. Then I saw this on Pinterest and I was sold! I went back to Hobby Lobby for a wire wreath frame and whipped this baby up last night. Now, if I had to do it over again, I would still cut the jellies into 6" strips (they're already in strips, but they're really long), but I would also cut them into smaller strips width-wise... probably just in half. Here's why I'd do that... I ran out of fabric!! and when I went back to Hobby Lobby today for another jelly roll, of course they were out of the one I chose.... so I walked myself to the ribbon (which was right next to the fabrics) and chose my favorite color. I knocked out a giant bow and tied it to the side, then fluffed up the fabric to hide the gaps. Sorry for the horrible pictures, I realized at 10pm that I forgot to take pictures when I finished it, so here it is on the back of my front door and on my fridge, it's being held up with a clippy magnet right now. I'm very pleased with it!

But two things have me super excited today, a planner and a pencil sharpener! First off, I just ordered my very first Erin Condren Teacher's Lesson Planner (complete with notepads and gift labels). I'll post pictures once they arrive! And secondly, I should be receiving one of the "sharpeners that all the teachers are talking about" in a few days. That's right, I'm talking about Troy's super quiet pencil sharpeners. I'm just excited that I remembered to bring my Ticonderoga's home from school last week to sharpen with it!

I spent the first week out of school training at a restaurant, and this last week I've been waiting tables. I worked at this restaurant all through grad school and my first two years teaching, and although that location has since closed, the original one is just down the road from my condo. Both the owner and head manager remembered me from my grad school days, and so I was put on an accelerated training schedule! My ridiculous memory has helped me get back into the restaurant frame of mind (I remember all of the dishes, woot woot!), and our location is super family-friendly so there have been a bunch of cutie kiddos (which helps when I'm missing my students). But hopefully I won't have to miss them for long, since I start the Math Institute for my cluster tomorrow morning, and it's being held at my school, and 4 of my munchkins from last year should be attending. I looked at my calendar this evening and there are only like 3, maybe 4 weeks that I don't have something planned... seriously?? I have the Math Institute this week, then two days next week of getting ready for the Common Core in Math at the STEM High School, then two weeks of nada, a long weekend in Brooklyn for the kickball tournament (my team is defending our title, two years running), then the day after I come back it's the Summer Literacy Institute, then another week of nada, and then it's back to school for pre-planning... are any of y'all doing staff development this summer?

I'm hoping that these days spent on math will help me figure out how I want to organize my math block next year. I do the Daily 5, and our school's expectation is that you're doing Guided Math, and I've read Laney Sammons' book, and Debbie Diller's "Math Work Stations," and I've seen the BUILD model for math on Pinterest, and I'm just trying to pick and choose what works for me, and how to organize it all, but I'm so not in the frame of mind for thinking about next year yet. The giant tub of stuff to work on this summer hasn't even made it out of my car yet (whoops). What do you think about Guided Math/ Work Stations?Miss Dennishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16304788180473065577noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1433416580770207266.post-34923701195111955562012-05-09T21:32:00.004-04:002012-05-09T21:32:39.094-04:00le sigh...so I'm a liar, I never posted pictures from our field trips, I sprained my ankle and skinned my knee on Sunday, our walking trip to the park was postponed today due to rainy weather, and my principal said she'd like me to teach science specials next year. It's not a done deal yet, but she let me express my opinion on the matter, which was: I'm a team player and I won't say no if she decides that that's what she wants me to do, but if I had the choice, I'd say no... I mean, I taught science lab last year, but that's it... every other year I've been in the classroom (4th, 1st, and now 2nd), and this is just my first year in 2nd... I'd like to stay, especially since I signed up for all this stuff over the summer to help me be a better 2nd grade teacher... She told me not to stress out about it (which is my first instinct), and that she'd let me know soon since she wants to announce all of the changes for next year by Friday, as in the day after next... I really really really hope that I get to stay in 2nd, especially since I'm in my third school in two years due to being displaced at the beginning and end of last year... I really just want some stability... sorry for the rant, I'm just feeling icky... my allergies decided to kick my hiney tonight, and forced me out of my jammies to go to target to get meds, and when I got back to my car, this box of a kia was parked thisclose to my car, so I had to climb in from the passenger side and over the center console, which was just super fun with a sprained ankle and scraped up knee let me tell you what...

but hey! it's Wednesday, we're over the hump for the week, my kiddies were SILENT yesterday while I read eight chapters of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and LOVED the movie today! Plus, I'll get to wear jeans for 4 days this week due to teacher appreciation jeans pass, park day today (which didn't happen), park day tomorrow, and then regular spirit wear Friday, woot woot woot. And we only have 10 days left of school.... aaah!Miss Dennishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16304788180473065577noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1433416580770207266.post-30105790705931487882012-04-27T19:27:00.004-04:002012-07-06T23:01:02.067-04:00field tripped out! What a week! We had two, 2, two field trips this week, one yesterday and one today, both involved a lot of walking... add to that my decision to walk almost four miles on Wednesday, and you've got one super tired teacher! We went to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center in Atlanta yesterday, it was AWESOME! Then today we walked to our city's downtown area for "City Days," (not sure if that's the actual name, but that's what I called it all day). Of course I left my camera at school when I booked it out at 3:45, so I'll post pictures and more details on Monday.
How was your week? How many days left of school do you have? We have 18!Miss Dennishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16304788180473065577noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1433416580770207266.post-91209951238061462902012-04-20T08:16:00.000-04:002012-07-06T23:00:43.635-04:00blast from the pastJust a quick post before the kiddos get here this morning, I swear that the solar storms are still going on in my house, the internet flat-out refused to work yesterday...

So we're chugging along in our study of fairy tales, and my "Frog Prince" book has a record that goes with it. The kiddos were so confused by this strange object. When I asked them what they thought it was, or if they had ever seen one before I got answers like "it's this thing that you put in an old-school DVD player." I quickly sent a post-it to the Media Center to see if they still had a record player, AND THEY DID!! We plugged it up, slapped that record down, and you wouldn't believe how silent it was as I set it up. We listened to the story, and had to flip the record over halfway through, they were so amazed!!

Here are a few pics I snapped with my phone, it was so cute to see them all huddled around watching the record spin!
Things have been moving along in the classroom, with a few bumps along the way, but it's SPRING BREAK!!!

I finally brought my camera home, to upload pics on my donorschoose.org page, and so I thought I'd share a few pictures with you, but it turns out that most of them are on my phone, and I don't really feel like dealing with itunes right now, so I'll get on that tomorrow (probably) and I'll leave you with this picture of my cuties thanking our donors, and then a picture of our mini Horton's from The Glyph Girls. I set the printer to print two pages on one sheet of paper, so our Horton's ended up being smaller and more manageable for the kiddos. I think they look awesome!
Skip Counting is Really Great!I came across these videos back when I was teaching odd and even. And after one of my darlings requested the "get up, get down song" for working music last week, I found this whole playlist of all the videos! I'm talking counting by every number up to 12! The videos are super adorable, and the songs are catchy! Now I don't show the videos (but they're fabulous for those quick minute breaks!!), I just minimize the youtube window and the song plays through our projection system (I don't even have to have the projector on!) If you use the link that I'm sending you to below, you just hit play once and then all the songs will play (like a playlist, which it is, haha!)

Let me know if you use these in your room! Your munchkins will love them, I promise!!
The classrooms on my side of the hall all had the kiddos create a 100th day project (let me know if you'd like the letter we sent home, I have it in English and Spanish!). After the kinders paraded through the school, we opened our doors (and the connecting doors) and had a little gallery walk to check out all of the awesome "hundredness." Here are some highlights (from all four classes):

I've got pictures to share, but first I'm going to tell you how it went down. I started the lesson by showing the kiddos a dreamcatcher (that I found at dollar tree) and asking them to talk to a friend about it (have they seen one before, do they know what it's called, what it's for, etc.). I then read them "The Legend of the Dreamcatcher" which I found online and typed up. I then showed them the "Bad Dreams/Good Dreams" t-chart and asked them to listen for words for each while I read "A Picture Book of Martin Luther King, Jr." by David A. Adler. Afterwards, we recorded the bad things from MLK, Jr's life (segregation, violence, hate, bombings of houses) and the good things (equality, peace, Nobel Peace Prize, love) on our chart. I gave each student a paper plate that I had cut the middle out of and had them punch 9 holes around the middle, and 3 holes on the bottom (they did this in the morning, before announcements). I let each student pick their yarn color, beads, and feathers. I showed them how to get started, and then they watched me make a dreamcatcher. Some of them got frustrated, they had a hard time "staying in the middle," they wanted to take the yarn around the outside of their plate. Once their dreamcatchers were finished, they wrote two "bad dreams" and two "good dreams" on the part of the paper plate that I had cut out (but you could use regular copy paper). They cut out the dreams and then glued them to the dreamcatcher. The "bad dreams" are caught in the web, waiting to be burned by Grandfather Sun's morning rays, and the "good dreams" are turned into dew and are sliding down the feathers to return to the Earth. This took a reeeeealllly long time to complete, but it was worth it, the kiddos have a deeper understanding of the "I Have a Dream" speech, as well as MLK, Jr's life. Now, pictures!!
so I mentioned last week that my kiddos were reminded to choose good-fit AR books during media center checkout time... and they were encouraged to take tests on books that they read, that I read, that other teachers read to them... no brainer, read book. take test. get points. get prizes. simple enough, right? WRONG! We're in the midst of a gingerbread stories study, and so yesterday before we went to the media center we read The Library Gingerbread Man which is oh, so cute! We get to the media center (and their sweet teacher, me! had rearranged our Tuesday morning schedule so that we have time on the computers to take AR tests, then turn in our books and select new ones, MUCH better imho than getting books on Tuesdays and then taking AR tests the next day during our computer lab time...) get logged on to AR, take our tests, return our books, select two new ones, sit and read quietly our awesome new books while we wait for everyone to finish up, and Miss Dennis checks our scores.... and only 5 of us passed the test. womp, womp, womp.... I was so sad, frustrated, disappointed... and then I looked at our class points report, seriously??!? 52% passing rate, some kiddos haven't even taken 1 AR test yet this year, some have failed more than they've passed, some have failed them all, are you kidding me????

So being the mean teacher that I am, I highlighted the tests that they didn't pass, had them staple it into their agenda, and make sure that their parents saw how awesome (a few), or so not awesome they've been doing. ooh, so mean! I also got advice from the media goddesses (this is my first year in a school that does AR), and we've decided that if they don't pass their test on the books that they've had for a week, they don't get to check out new books, they have to keep those books until they pass the test. so, so mean!

Yesterday was a bit of a tear-down day (and for good reason, I think), so today was a build-em-back up day. I didn't have to announce that the computer was on and open for tests, and I heard a lot of "I got a 100!!" Which was awesome, because I introduced these suckers today:

They took maybe all of fifteen minutes to make, start to finish! I found a pack of 12 "photo frame buttons" at Hobby Lobby, they look like this before you do anything to them

then I punched circles out of scrapbook paper, added a little circle label that I formatted in word, quick assembled them, and ta-da!!

I also bought some little craft paper sacks and fancy plastic beads (tropical colored stars and little animals) to be my 100% and non-fiction beads for "bead-azzling" readers' necklaces, totally pinspired. I'm going to introduce those babies tomorrow, but I'm not crazy about the "bead-azzling" part... reminds me of the fact that I didn't have one. Any suggestions? I think "bead readers" sounds like speed readers, and that's not what I want them to be doing with their AR books... "we read for beads" is sort of cute, but that's not why they're reading... blah, my brain is mush right now... help!!

Y'all, the past two days have been stressful, and D.R.A.M.A. filled... serious tattles and not getting work done, and getting in trouble at lunch, and saying inappropriate things to each other, and fussing at kids for not bringing back their report card envelope, calling baloney when they said I didn't give them a report card, then apologizing because I DID forget to give them a report card, and writing TEN academic contracts to go into said report cards that I found hiding on my desk under my to-do list with #1: write academic contracts, and not picking good books in the media center, and not passing AR tests, and two kiddos who can't seem to leave each other alone, even after talking to TWO AP's about the sitch... and I wore my suede boots today and it totally started raining on the way home :( AND it's only Tuesday, Tuesday, seriously??? OH, and we have early morning intervention in the am, and I just want to sleep in...

but it was our 2nd 9 weeks honor roll ceremony this afternoon, and all 7 of my honorees were perfect angels during it, and 2 of the 7 were SO proud of themselves: 1 for making honor roll (he was super sad that he didn't make it last quarter) and 1 for getting a BUG award (bringing up grades) he worked SO hard last quarter!

um, and I've asked these questions today: "what's the difference between cheetah and leopard spots" and "can you eat the white stuff on brie" in case you're wondering... cheetahs have plain black spots, leopards have black rosettes with brown in the middle (thanks google!)... and the white stuff is prob. bitter (thanks mom!)

in an effort to decompress, and to entertain myself while I ate the brie sans white stuff, I watched two of my favorite stop-motion videos... I leave you with them now!
